A sports-themed exhibition, which is allowing me to revisit an image I have used before, from The Swimmer (dir. Frank Perry, 1968).</p><p>It is a very fleeting moment from the movie, in which Rusty Towers (we can deduce this from the novel by John Cheever, in which he is named) floats in a swimming pool at a riotous afternoon party. The movie is fairly faithful to Cheever's novel, and he plays a very small cameo part as a guest at the party (as does Joan Rivers). Burt Lancaster plays the lead as Ned Merrill, 'swimming home' through his neighbours' pools.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNFA1hXXCjIT-Aj2hNl6C0OZ6UU3lyL5B8cgiDNBViHI5g6tvEmhM2auDslI6SLLtXklrVumBeCPrS8baVRcwaNCLkn5nCt4UOkXHNyHOmaQlHkyXYtJVEEmpGn6hI7Hm2tPKgc-MO9Lw94C08y2JX14L0CArDF-6tI6Lj-uk4rtdfcL57oafPzIkq/s470/Screen%20Shot%202023-01-07%20at%2012.10.45.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="368" data-original-width="470" height="251" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNFA1hXXCjIT-Aj2hNl6C0OZ6UU3lyL5B8cgiDNBViHI5g6tvEmhM2auDslI6SLLtXklrVumBeCPrS8baVRcwaNCLkn5nCt4UOkXHNyHOmaQlHkyXYtJVEEmpGn6hI7Hm2tPKgc-MO9Lw94C08y2JX14L0CArDF-6tI6Lj-uk4rtdfcL57oafPzIkq/s320/Screen%20Shot%202023-01-07%20at%2012.10.45.png" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Study for Rusty Towers</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSFEm9isiaDGT7U01t2kMpCGdgnuE_9Ot2t2DR6JJweqHwbwQm-MkcIJD7JhjxuNQyk4Xbeasm9zYuQabJAjy7mRpryB8AvOMaDDWdR9NyZoCC-Y-ppxZxYUnOe73dva9w6vJM0SFSnajv3paI--qMwp9ZbBgqmLEISjRxpCJp1Yl5uz6z-DySO1xc/s564/Screen%20Shot%202023-01-07%20at%2012.12.31.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="564" height="227" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSFEm9isiaDGT7U01t2kMpCGdgnuE_9Ot2t2DR6JJweqHwbwQm-MkcIJD7JhjxuNQyk4Xbeasm9zYuQabJAjy7mRpryB8AvOMaDDWdR9NyZoCC-Y-ppxZxYUnOe73dva9w6vJM0SFSnajv3paI--qMwp9ZbBgqmLEISjRxpCJp1Yl5uz6z-DySO1xc/s320/Screen%20Shot%202023-01-07%20at%2012.12.31.png" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Burt Lancaster as Ned Merrill</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpoZxrTzQxSwHwyBrcAvdPYhJ_6ocIER8qgoDlPdd0s560Y2WBez7cN_BXcbde7EuB-IEhGru889ePkyDJskUZG9eUmo6hgR6F-U6EwYH_SPO95laiwgr2nsEHMQ-4BX_EBT43STr0BnWJKK_DiOdDqwkfly2SXE6umtoAknz0vLlLegFCq92_TZmE/s517/Screen%20Shot%202023-01-07%20at%2012.13.08.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="422" data-original-width="517" height="261" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpoZxrTzQxSwHwyBrcAvdPYhJ_6ocIER8qgoDlPdd0s560Y2WBez7cN_BXcbde7EuB-IEhGru889ePkyDJskUZG9eUmo6hgR6F-U6EwYH_SPO95laiwgr2nsEHMQ-4BX_EBT43STr0BnWJKK_DiOdDqwkfly2SXE6umtoAknz0vLlLegFCq92_TZmE/s320/Screen%20Shot%202023-01-07%20at%2012.13.08.png" width="320" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Rusty Towers in 'The Swimmer'</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPj4eFjkJGVQ0KWGu9GMlJKxvj8ExS_jYWmV5QcwudaBQR9ZU2_2itUyntd5sc6BTR4NmslaQcQioL85xBsFgDylzmqnetzjvPwgV2hCGIZxx29JZSrGyNnFsEZaol2jVON5vg9jdnwGD5RhHQGEaDSVO52hPEQeyt6E6MwW4iWC3ALZxhkJhYLOLA/s4624/Swimmer%20in%20progress.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4624" data-original-width="3468" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPj4eFjkJGVQ0KWGu9GMlJKxvj8ExS_jYWmV5QcwudaBQR9ZU2_2itUyntd5sc6BTR4NmslaQcQioL85xBsFgDylzmqnetzjvPwgV2hCGIZxx29JZSrGyNnFsEZaol2jVON5vg9jdnwGD5RhHQGEaDSVO52hPEQeyt6E6MwW4iWC3ALZxhkJhYLOLA/s320/Swimmer%20in%20progress.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Work-in-progress</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p><br /></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5986769766896403181.post-52164133840956970842023-01-05T14:49:00.002+00:002023-01-05T22:38:37.944+00:00January Notes from the Studio<p>A return to my sometimes diaristic tendency to report from the studio. Recently watched a great Irish-made documentary on actor Richard Harris. His rendition of MacArthur Park was one new revelation to me, as well as the fact that he was five times Racquets champion at Kilkee. Forthcoming sports-themed group show at the Naughton Gallery QUB has got me working on this small painting, titled something like 'The actor Richard Harris hit the ball so hard it sometimes left holes in the wall'.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlNvK4ppO6pHE6GNHnTComyzQ695xAqHC-OBZrI3Ya-LUely-6RK-Q20NETZSG_1QGy-nLmRfwlQtfVR6RtBj6-V7b4UWvlc8T89RGsYPOrAKAtrZhCBTPBCEVAvKSnCCnD8dC9IPCrWykFxKqKKwotfvAMuvwfpZJ-zrXttEkRAYrss1gkbg3uTNR/s3627/20230105_125947.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3627" data-original-width="3218" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjlNvK4ppO6pHE6GNHnTComyzQ695xAqHC-OBZrI3Ya-LUely-6RK-Q20NETZSG_1QGy-nLmRfwlQtfVR6RtBj6-V7b4UWvlc8T89RGsYPOrAKAtrZhCBTPBCEVAvKSnCCnD8dC9IPCrWykFxKqKKwotfvAMuvwfpZJ-zrXttEkRAYrss1gkbg3uTNR/s320/20230105_125947.jpg" width="284" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6xy34WPSuAQy9KT4ieboRDRUlVQv6tLIkZb4m3G_KWlwfYp8WC-J-q9rCyjS8znSpuYxbWwOZDY-itrKf44mrxgxZIslO43XoI0QikdwAPNEuoS3XPre3baHWHohHnd0AI6N73nsSszEtbcYs83Pkp3GwcOo3y7z-DxRGkx4r2VJSFuj64ONOKCuZ/s2328/IMG-20230105-WA0000.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2328" data-original-width="2160" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6xy34WPSuAQy9KT4ieboRDRUlVQv6tLIkZb4m3G_KWlwfYp8WC-J-q9rCyjS8znSpuYxbWwOZDY-itrKf44mrxgxZIslO43XoI0QikdwAPNEuoS3XPre3baHWHohHnd0AI6N73nsSszEtbcYs83Pkp3GwcOo3y7z-DxRGkx4r2VJSFuj64ONOKCuZ/s320/IMG-20230105-WA0000.jpeg" width="297" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5986769766896403181.post-44187092871880900302022-05-08T11:11:00.000+01:002022-05-08T11:11:07.652+01:00Fuller on Berg<p> From Peter Fuller's essay on Adrian Berg, Serpentine Gallery exhibition, Summer 1986 -</p><p>(Peter Fuller's Modern Painters, Reflections on British Art, edited by John McDonald)</p><p>"In 1973, Berg sent me a copy of something he had written in which he tried to distinguish between 'critical' and 'creative' attitudes to thinking and looking. A painter I had known just a little something about before- and not having seen his show at IMMA in Dublin recently, regretting this very much now. Thanks to a studio visit by Katie Lindsay today, she pointed me in his direction, with an upcoming show at Tate Britain to look forward to. Top Ten Paintings to the right links to a lovely interview in which the artist talks about Mirror, 1966.</div>

<span style="font-family: "baskerville"; font-size: 11.0pt;">It has been a particularly bad
day in the studio, full of painting problems. I retire for a while and,
aimlessly it seems at first, reach for a book, although when I settle on
Berger’s The Shape of a Pocket, my aimlessness seems to hold the hope of
becoming a deliberate action. Normally in such circumstances, I have habitually
turned to books about painters to find a way around painting problems, but in
recent months it is increasingly the written word- of a novelist, an essayist, or
perhaps a short story writer- that has provided me with solace. Berger’s words
have very often carried me as a painter, so I remain hopeful, this Tuesday
evening, as I decide to turn to ‘A Man with Tousled Hair'."<o:p></o:p></span></div>
