Been looking a lot at Vuillard recently..amongst others.Particularly like this piece. Really interesting use of colour, space and figuration.

Hi Cian- yes, all of those Nabis painters were great. Disregarded by some I suppose because of the safe, domestic settings- but that overlooks the strong psychologic elements and intensity of these works. Bonnard suffered the same perceptions by the 'radical painters' of his time- Picasso hated his work. Of course, now that Peter Doig and Daniel Richter keep banging on about them all, they're right back in the mix! There was a big show of Bonnard's interiors at Met NY I think it was- I've got the book, must show it to you sometime- cheers for now, D

Thanks for those books -loved them.
Wasn't aware, as I said to you, that Doig et al were harping on about Vuillard. But, I can see why.
It was by chance really that I got into him - through Alessandra in Rome.
There are some very intense pieces, and I have a strong gut reaction to the work.
I can understand how it could have been dismissed at the time. Strange that...well, as Guston put it "They call it art afterwards you know."
