Ratso Rizzo

Midnight Cowboy/ John Schlesinger/ 1969

Work in progress/ March 2011

There is a scene somewhere in the above movie which often slips into my mind- in fact, I am quite obsessed by it. At some point Ratso Rizzo appears in battered old white canvas sneakers,  undermining his brave attempts to slick himself up. I am drawn to this type of thing, partly I think because white shoes will pick up and show the brushmarks of day-to-day existence. A terrible metaphor I know, but I'm glad to have an opportunity now to shod this one legged figure in a work of mine with a similar old white sneaker. Thank you Ratso.
