Bravo's Next Great Artist

About a year ago myself and Susan were discussing what was then a rumoured 'America's Next Top Model/ProjectRunway/Pop Idol, type show featuring artists. This has come to be and I have to admit I have watched the entire series. Being an avid ANTM viewer I expected much of the same, fluff tv with the prerequisite bitching and backstabbing, this is exactly what I got, twofold. Sarah Jessica Parker is a producer on the show and makes a couple of appearances, professes to be an avid art lover and squeals quite excessively. Some of the work is ok and a lot of it is awful. It is truly hoffifying and yet compulsive viewing. Be warned! (I know this is an unusual post for this blog but I had to share this)

In favour of the provincial

A wonderful film on the painter Brenda Chamberlain, and her time spent on Bardsey Island: BFI Player There is a humanity at play in many of the films on this resource, a very different feel to how artists, and the people around them, responded to the medium of film recordings in earlier times. There is something to be explored within all of this, the provincial settings and how things were encountered and recorded. A series of very early silent film documentaries chimes with all of this. It is interesting to experience the short moment at the next link - workers exiting a textiles mill in Pendlebury. Followed by LS Lowry painting at home, some 70 years later, and the people and surroundings he recorded in paint. BFI Player/ mill workers BFI Player/ The Industrial Artist

Patrick Procktor Exhibition

In a previous post NOCM had highlighted the work of Procktor, having chanced upon his 'Long Live the Great Leap Forward' of 1965-67 which featured in an old copy of Studio International (the work is difficult to trace, or perhaps had been destroyed in the catastrophic studio fire Procktor suffered). Procktor's work, always interesting in any time, appears in recent years to have renewed relevance within the revival of certain figurative approaches in contemporary painting. His fairly divergent styles can be seen to connect now to painters such as Alex Katz, Peter Doig and Elizabeth Peyton. In fact, a photograph of Procktor and David Hockney throws up an interesting comparison with the Peyton work below.
