Parallel Universes

Click on Post title for link to recent BBC Horizon programme called 'What is Reality?' The programme's ability to link many of its ideas with pictures, particularly holograms, made it a bit easier for me to get my head around the whole thing. The idea that even maths/ science boffins find inspiration and connections in the world of pictures and diagrams I found exciting. Here, by way of comparison, are two images of 'space'- one 'diagrammatic' and the other 'holographic'. It appears that parallel universes are always present in the art world!

The Painters' Maxim

Looking at a lecture by Malcolm Morley today (click on Post Title for link), he quoted something that Jasper Johns had said which struck a chord- it's really the only thing you ever need to know as a painter: "Do something, do something else. Do something else to that." When things are getting a bit tricky with a work, it's all you need to know.

Work in Progress

Who was Henry Darger?

Tony Godfrey's 'Painting Today' again...Henry Darger is another great inclusion. Click on Post Title above for link.

Future Shock

As my '1972' paintings progress, I've been looking out for any other stuff that connects with 70's culture. Black on green is a great colour combination, so it was really the style of the book spine of this 1974 edition of Future Shock that caught my eye to start with. One thing leads to another and it turns out that a documentary narrated by Orson Welles was made about Alvin Toffler's book. The documentary has a lot more going for it than the book....click on the Post Title above picture if you want to go back to the future....
